Bean leaf beetles
If bean leaf beetles are cutting off seedlings below the cotyledons, how much of this type of injury can a soybean stand tolerate?
What information can you give me about the bean leaf beetle and is the economic threshold of early stages of vegetative growth different than in later stages?
Black cutworm moth
Are there ways to anticipate the occurrence of black cutworms?
Besides black cutworms, what other cutworms can cause injury in cornfields each spring?
Do black cutworms have any natural enemies?
What is considered an intense black cutworm capture?
What is the life cycle of black cutworms in Illinois, and what types of fields are most at risk?
Brown Recluse Spider
We live in mid-Missouri on a farm and our house was infested with brown recluse spiders last summer. We hired a professional company to come out and help get them under control. That was unsuccessful and we are hoping to find someone that has done a study on these and would have some helpful information as to getting rid of them. Last fall we caught hundreds of them on sticky pads but, during the winter we have not been catching very many. Can anyone help?
Corn rootworm
Are corn hybrids with large root systems and good root regeneration characteristics always the best "yielders" following corn rootworm larval injury?
Are root ratings of 4.0 (one node of roots pruned) on the Iowa State 1 to 6 root injury scale required before yield losses begin to accrue?
Can I use the threshold designed with yellow sticky traps to trigger an insecticide application to my soybean field to suppress egg laying by the new strain of the Western corn rootworm?
Can corn rootworm beetles be managed in cornfields to prevent egg laying?
Does the accumulation of heat units during the spring affect soil insecticide performance against corn rootworms?
How can corn rootworm densities resurge so rapidly from year to year?
How should I assess the performance of my soil insecticide for corn rootworm control?
I'm not real comfortable with the accuracy of my corn rootworm beetle counts because these insects always seem to be moving. Are there any other monitoring techniques besides counting beetles on plants?
I've been told corn rootworm larvae are hard to find. If I dig around the bases of some corn plants, will I be able to find some?
I've used a soil insecticide for years on my continuous corn ground. I've never really noticed many corn rootworm beetles. Am I correct in assuming that the soil insecticide worked?
If I don't see many lodged corn plants in my field, can I assume that my soil insecticide performed satisfactorily against corn rootworms?
If I find corn rootworm larvae in mid-June, what, if anything, does it mean?
If I find corn rootworm larvae, should I be concerned about insecticide resistance?
If I treat a field to prevent excessive silk clipping, why can't I count on this application to eliminate the egg-laying threat of corn rootworm beetles?
Is it difficult to distinguish between male and female corn rootworm beetles and gravid and nongravid females?
Let's assume that I follow your suggestions and find very little corn rootworm larval injury, can I now assume that I got my money's worth for using a soil insecticide?
Should I consider the use of another type of sticky trap to monitor adult western corn rootworms in soybean fields? I've been told some other traps capture more adults.
Should I consider treating my soybean field in east-central Illinois to suppress the egg-laying activities of adult western corn rootworms?
What monitoring techniques and thresholds should be used in a corn rootworm beetle-suppression program to prevent significant egg laying in corn?
What's the most recent theory used to explain why crop rotation no longer prevents corn rootworm larval injury in east central Illinois?
When should I be concerned if I find corn rootworm larvae?
When should I begin to scout cornfields for adult corn rootworms?
When should I begin to scout soybean fields in east-central Illinois for western corn rootworm adults?
Why are the economic thresholds different for first-year corn and continuous corn regarding corn rootworms?
Will a single insecticide application sufficiently suppress egg laying by corn rootworm adults?
Corn
Can the odds be improved regarding the performance of a soil insecticide each year?
Should a field coming out of well-established sod and planted to corn be treated with a soil insecticide?
Economics of farming
What is the total cost of insect control in the US and what are the key insects that threaten our economy?
Economics of pest control
Where could I gather economic information about the costs of pest management?
European corn borer
At what stage of development do European corn borers begin to penetrate into the stalk tissue?
If I find European corn borer larvae within the whorls of my
Bt
-plants, does this mean that the
Bt
-corn is not working?
Over half the plants in my field have whorl-feeding damage, but I can't find any European corn borers. Why is this, and should I treat the field?
What are "action sites?" My neighbors have heard that treating these areas with an insecticide or mowing them may prevent European corn borers from damaging my corn. Is there any truth to this?
What are the scouting procedures for first-generation European corn borer, and how many plants do I need to look at?
What are the survival prospects for first-generation European corn borer larvae?
What would be the effect on the "attractiveness" of corn to European corn borer moths if I plant alternating strips of corn and soybeans (eight and eight) on a portion of ridge-tilled land? Since there are strips of soybeans will they opt for a better looking field? What about corn rootworms?
Grape colaspis
Are there any rescue treatments for grape colaspis injury?
How do I know when injury is caused by grape colaspis?
How do I tell the difference between small white grubs and grape colaspis larvae?
What is the life cycle of the grape colaspis?
Why am I seeing grape colaspis injury in corn planted after soybeans? I thought grape colaspis caused problems in corn planted after red clover.
Green cloverworm
Are green cloverworms an economic threat to soybeans?
Potato Leafhopper
What do potato leafhoppers look like?
What kind of life cycle do potato leafhoppers have?
What's the best way to scout for potato leafhoppers?
Soybean
Is it still recommended that bacterial inoculum be used when planting soybeans into a field that has not had beans grown in it for several years? What are the guidelines for determining need and is one form of the inoculant better than another?
Last year we had a disease attack some of our soybeans quite viciously, in several different fields. It happened when the beans were 2" to 4" tall. It consisted of lesion that was more or less at soil level, then the top of the plant dying. It occurred mainly in bunches 3" to 8" long. The local agronomist said it was probably riczotonia. But we treat for that and other seed diseases. What do you think?
Which insects present the biggest risk to soybean production?
White grubs
Are there any established thresholds for white grubs in commercial corn?
Are there any rescue treatment options for white grubs in commercial cornfields?
If I discover white grubs during a spring tillage pass, should I use a soil insecticide when I plant corn?
Is it difficult to separate true white grubs from annual white grubs?
Wireworm control
Can you provide some information about the life cycles of wireworms and their management?
japanese beetle
What is the economic threshold for Japanese beetle infestations in soybeans?
What is the history of the introduction of the Japanese beetle into the United States?
